Derek was born on the 18th June 1936 he attended the famous rugby league playing Bewerley Street school the Headmaster was Edgar Meeks who was also Chairman of Hunslet RLFC Chairman. At the same time our past president Harry Jepson OBE was teaching there. Under the watchful eyes of them two great men Derek learned his rugby league skills. He represented his school and Hunslet City Boys at loose forward. (I Didn’t know Hunslet was a City). He then took the normal path and went on to play with Hunslet U17 & then the U19s. Sadly for Derek he was not offered professional terms at Hunslet but Bramley RLFC snapped him up and he went on to play for their First team.
In the 1958/59 season he fell out with the Villagers and Harry Jepson invited him back to play for Hunslet. He played a full season in the Hunslet ‘A’ team and at the end of the season the second team coach Jack Evans informed him that Hunslet had signed a lot of good young players on the club would not be retaining him.
When I spoke to Derek the one thing that stands out is that Derek still loves the Hunslet club and if he was cut in half the colour of his veins would be Myrtle, White & Flame. Have a great day Derek.
