He was called up for his national service in 1949 and served with the K.O.Y.L.I, where he was the battalion boxing champion and also the football captain. At 22, he signed for Burnley FC, and later joined Chesterfield FC. He played rugby league as an amateur with Eastmoor R.L.F.C. before joining Dewsbury R.L.C., In 1958 Hunslet paid £2000.00 for him. He later joined Bradford Northern and retired in 1964. He then became a soccer referee and held several other roles in rugby and football. He then went on to become president of Yorkshire County Rugby League in the 1980s.
